About Me

Pollyanne; aptly named I consider myself a "Pollyanna" of sorts - someone who seems always to be able to find something to be "glad" about no matter what circumstances arise. It is sometimes used pejoratively, referring to someone whose optimism is excessive to the point of naïveté or refusing to accept the facts of an unfortunate situation. I suppose it's for others to judge whether this is accurate or not - either way life throws up it's challenges over this we have no power....we do,however, have the power to choose how to continue; in the same direction - in a different direction or somewhere in the middle?

Talking Tributes - May 2013

Self confessed culture-vulture and dog lover!
Front of House, Promotions and Gallery Curator at the Embassy Theatre, Skegness.
Tweet me @PresentDayPolly with anything arty of interest. All views my own!

This month my pick celebrates contemporary home-grown talent with Sheffield based artist  Sean Williams and music from 50 Years of the most commercially successful act in the rock music era …which fits with a favourite topic of mine – Talking Tributes.

ART

When I first viewed Sean’s work I must admit to initially thinking “interesting photos” only to realise on further inspection that they were in fact paintings!
The series include views of isolated farmsteads, housing estates and marinas under construction so although images we may see, walk past and dismiss as staples of everyday life they are not the typical of what we all come to expect hung in galleries; this makes them all the more curious and definitely worth viewing!

I asked Sean to summarise his style within the series he replied modestly but with consideration “ I suppose I’d say I was just a painter, in a sense, documenting our suburban environment

The Golden Suburbs is on display in the Embassy evening Art Gallery until June 25th.

CULTURAL COMMENT

Everyone enjoys a great tribute act right? Then why (although being a core-part of live entertainment across the world) is “tribute” a dirty-word viewed with scorn and snobbery?
Agreed there are many out there than really should-not-give-up-the-day-job but a select number who are worth every penny! These artists love what they do – live for the music they make and even in some cases appear to have more belief in what they convey than the original artiste.

Quality theatrical tribute shows are glitzy, slick, choreographed, exceptional value for money and the only chance to re-live the music and atmosphere of an evening paying homage to the many artistes no longer with us. Other fans also follow “living” tributes to enjoy a night out WITHOUT paying a fortune for seats in an arena 200 miles away only to end up watching a 50ft high TV screen or being trampled in mosh-pit – and that’s IF you can get tickets in the first place!

Although many top class tributes acts got their big-break on TV shows such as Opportunity Knocks and Stars In Their Eyes you will rarely see them on shows like the Voice; why? Because the best acts are working - whether it’s a corporate gig for the Chelsea team, a Royal Command charity performance, tearing up the LasVegas Strip in the most famous tribute show in the world Legends or on a stage in a seaside town local to you!

If you fancy an evening with Frank Sinatra or Freddie Mercury – ACDC or ABBA give a tribute a try – after all without them what original, accessible live entertainment would we be left with...Eurovision?

Let the Legends live!

ENTERTAINMENT

It was 50 Years ago that The Beatles had their first hit record “Love Me Do” and went on to shake the world with their British Brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll - the Up Beat Beatles will be taking the audience on a journey that is the story of The Beatles through their songs and are keen to hear from readers who have a connection with the Fab Four; perhaps you played on the same bill as the group, worked the bar on one of their gigs or saw them perform and have a souvenir to prove it?

If you have a story and would like to share it get in touch - the best anecdote will be invited to see the show and meet the band!

The UpBeat Beatles perform on Friday 31st May at The Embassy Theatre Skegness. Visit www.embassytheatre.co.uk for more information.
